"The Man Who Carried Cash" a Book about Johnny Cash Review/ Giveaway

The Man Who Carried Cash cover

I just finished reading the wonderfully, informative book, " The Man Who Carried Cash", by Julie Chadwick and it was so good!  I did not want to finish the book because I didn't want the story to come to an end.  I am a huge Johnny Cash fan and this book told so much more about the man, how his career and life really happened than any I had seen or read.  I have seen movies about Mr. Cash's life and the movies didn't completely tell the whole story and the time line's didn't match.
This biography book about Johnny Cash is based on actual videos, recordings and calendar times of happening that were written when and where they took place.  Jonathan Holiff  is the son of Saul Holiff who was Johnny's manager and side-by-side companion for 13 years.

This book tells how Johnny Cash went through drugs, adultery, divorce, jail, the White House and a second marriage.  I was amazed at the times he cancelled tours or just never showed up.  There were times he was on stage and passed out from drugs and once he had to be removed from the stage because he just stood there.
Johnny and June Carter also did not begin an affair as quickly as one movie shows them to have.  Johnny was still married to Vivian quite a while before the affair began.  He and Vivian had 4 daughters together and Johnny rarely ever saw his girls.   Even when Vivian found out about June Carter she refused to divorce him because of her Catholic religion.  Vivian Cash would later divorce Johnny because she just couldn't take life with him any more.
Saul Holiff worked with Johnny Cash through little shows to the big times such as Madison Square Garden and the Grand Old Opery.  Saul saved Johnny from lawsuits and troubles all across the country.  Johnny played all over the world and was the biggest entertainer to go to countries such as Japan.  Johnny toured with Glen Campbell, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more famous entertainers.
Saul was Jewish and he watched Johnny Cash go from drugs to a Christian fanatic at the end.  Saul could never really except the religion Johnny loved.  These two men were very different in many ways, but alike in many more.
The author also lets you in on the life of Saul Holiff in this book.  From very poor beginnings to a man who self made himself the manager to one of the worlds biggest entertainers in the world.  Saul made a lot of money with, and for Johnny Cash.  He too was not very involved with his sons and wife as he should of been, also becoming a drinker and mental abuser to his boys.
Saul quit Johnny in 1973 after being through the worst of times and the best of times with the man he helped make a superstar. No one to this day knows why he quit, but I feel like he wanted to a better husband and father because he had missed out on so much of that life.  This book will help you understand all the true facts of Johnny Cash's life once he was managed by Saul Holiff and you should find it very interesting.  I know I did.
I absolutely loved this book and enjoyed knowing the truth about Johnny Cash's life.  You can purchase this book in paperback for $19.99 here.  What a great gift for Johnny Cash fans everywhere!
